An important unresolved issue raised by Dr Klatt is how to effectively modify physicians’ conduct in the ordering of laboratory tests. He suggests that “Health care institutions must adopt practice-driven credentialing and privileging requirements for their providers and enforce top-down adherence to standards of practice.” Although recommendations for health care policy changes are beyond the scope of our article, we nevertheless fully agree that much work needs to be done to effect a more cost-effective use of laboratory tests by practicing physicians and applaud efforts such as those currently being undertaken by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.1 We hope that the proposed curriculum will be a helpful start in these efforts.
